CULTURE PROJECT

INTRODUCTION:

Culture is a shared set ofbeliefs, practices, attitudes and behaviors that are passed down from onegeneration to the next. Culture is not only the things that are visible fromthe outside Ð food, dress, music, language, dance or crafts; itÕs alsothings that are invisible Ð concepts of beauty, ideas about family, even, whatÕs funny.

PROCEEDURE:

Using your notes, theÒeveryone has a cultureÓ worksheet, and the iceberg activity to complete thisproject.

PRODUCT:

1. My Culture Assignment:

¤        Remember that ÒWho am IÓproject from the beginning of the year? LetÕs take it a step forwardÉ.

o       Think about thefollowing statements:

¤        No one is exactly likeme.

¤        I have many things incommon with the members of my family and community.

¤        Every person in theworld needs some of the same things I need.

¤        Refer to the icebergdiagram in your packet (teacher key to iceberg).Use the blank iceberg to create an ÒicebergÓ of you as an individual.

2. 7th GradeTime Capsule:

Culture changes over time. Itis constantly responding and adapting to society and the world around it. Theculture of the 7th grade class today in 2006 will change as youcontinue through your high school career. There will never be another 7thgrade class just like you and the 12th grade class of 2012 wouldprobably not recognize you! It is your job to remind your future selves abouttodayÕs culture!

¤        Refer to the icebergdiagram in your packet (teacher key to iceberg).Use the blank iceberg to create an ÒicebergÓ of the 7th grade class.

¤        Write your future self aletter describing the 7th grade culture. Be sure to mention both thegood and bad Ð the things you can see and the things you canÕt see (about1 page written Ð LEGIBLY!). Be sure to date it and sign it.

3. 7th GradeSocial Studies Paper Mural:

What do images tell us aboutourselves? Do you put up posters in your bedroom? Why do you do that? What dothey tell you about your interests and your culture? What is valuable andmeaningful to you? What other decorations do you have on your walls at home?

¤        How would you illustratethe culture of the 7th grade class?

¤        Sit down with at leastone other person in the class and start brainstorming what the 7thgrade culture of Isle High School is all about.

¤        Use your icebergs.

¤        There will be one papermural for both classes. Use the space wisely and creatively.

¤        Using drawings and wordscreate a representation of the culture of the 7th grade class hereat Isle High School.

¤        Color is a wonderfulthing!

¤        You should contribute atleast one thing as an individual!

What makes a culture a livingthing is that there are lots of different pieces - like a jigsaw puzzle Ðtogether its one culture. No need to argueÉ put both things on!
