CREATE A LAND – MAKING YOUR OWN TOPOGRAPHIC QUADRANGLE

OBJECTIVE: Using your knowledge of the rules and symbols used on topographic maps, you will create a fictional, but accurate topographic quadrangle.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

PROCEEDURE:

  1. Construct a rough draft including all geologic features on a piece of notebook paper. Start with water; add contour lines, put in main roads, and railroads (details of your city need not be included yet).
  2. Get your rough draft approved by ME and pick up one piece of tag board.
  3. Based on your rough drafty, create your final copy using correct symbols, colors, and border information. Colored pencilsÉ no markers.

REQUIRED ELEMENTS IN THE BORDER (use actual maps to help you):

  1. Map Bearing: Create a way of giving a map bearing or direction. Use Area References such as those on the worksheet I gave you or an alphabet/number code like on a road map.
  2. Ration and graphic scale: The ration scale, ÒScale = 1:24,000Ó, should be printed on the bottom with the following graphic scale below it in black.

Graphic scale:

  1. Contour interval: ÒContour Interval = 10 metersÓ should be on the bottom in black.
  2. Compass direction: Mark the direction on your map.
  3. Location Map: A map of the state with the quadrangle location blacken in.
  4. Quadrangle name: Name your quadrangle in the top right corner in black.
  5. Your Name and the Date (of completion): Place your name and the date of completion of your map in the lower left hand corner in black.

REQUIRED FEATURES ON YOUR MAP: Create a landscape including at least 1 of each of the following items and using the proper colors (minimum features is 27 – maximum for extra credit is 45).

  1. Blue features (3): lake, river and/or streams, swamp and/or marsh
  2. Green features (1): forest area
  3. Black features (11): small city with roads, houses, buildings, church, school, airport, park with walking trails, railroad (single track), and gravel pit.

¤       Use a single black line for your roads – do not try to make them double

¤       Please note the size of the houses and building – do not make them too big

¤       Airports need to be built on flat, dry land with open room on each end of the runway (a single runway with a couple of hangers – buildings – is sufficient)

  1. Bench Marks (6): Place bench marks on 5 major features and label surface elevations of all major lakes (black for land, blue for lakes).
  2. Named features (6): Name your lake(s), river(s), and 4 other major features (mountains, ridge, glacier, etc).
  3. Brown features: Contour lines are to be drawn with a 10-meter interval. Remember to darken and number index contour lines (every 5th line). There should be a 300-meter difference between your highest and lowest elevation.
