Introduction:

ARCHAEOLOGY is the study what humans have left behind. The challenge of the archaeologist is to learn about the cultures and behaviors of the people of the past by solving the riddle of what we find today.

Sometimes archaeologists have things like historic maps, photos, and literature such as diaries or books to help them solve the mystery. Most of the time, each shovel full of dirt, artifact, feature, or structure moves the archaeologist one step further in solving a jigsaw like puzzle that may never be entirely complete.

Archaeologists dig up the past, uncovering cultures, which have been covered through the years with dirt, water, and sand.

They study human remains, the items people have used, the garbage they leave behind, their houses É in short they study how people lived in the past.

There are two main branches of archaeology:

¤     Prehistoric: the study of people who lived before written records

¤     Historic: the study of people who lived after written records

As part of this assignment, you are going to be asked to look both.

Archaeologists wear many hatsÉ

¤     Map maker

¤     Geographer

¤     Scientist

¤     Architect

¤     Artist

¤     Historian

¤     Mathematician

In order to complete this assignment, you are going to have to wear them all!
