Egyptologists, welcome to Ernest's Archaeological Dig. Through this site you be will digging up information on the Internet. You will be performing many tasks to help you learn about Ancient Egypt.

 

To assist you with your dig, I will give you links to many excellent sites where you can discover all types of information. You will be learning about pyramids, Ancient Egyptian religion, gods and goddesses, mummification pharaohs, hieroglyphics, and more.

 

The Internet is Ernest's Archaeological Dig Site, and all Egyptologists will need to carefully work hard together and as individuals to find the artifacts that have been buried here. Have Fun!

Here are a few directions for a successful dig.

á      Keep an Archaeological Dig Journal. You are to write in this daily to tell:

o   What areas you have visited

o   What you saw

o   What you learned. (3 or 4 sentences will not be enough.)

á      Your dig journal will include your daily field notes of what you have accomplished as well as the examples of the days artifacts.

á      You will be divided into dig groups of 2 or 3 members.

á      Each dig group needs to complete at least 5 tasks (some negotiation is possible) in addition to a tour of Egypt, the archaeological dig, and the vocabulary words.

 

Each group MUST do these:

Begin your dig by checking out:

á      A map of Ancient Egypt

á      An archaeological dig at Giza,

á      The Secrets of the Lost Tomb

á      Cool Digs

 

Write in your journal about what you saw.

Go to the glossary sheet in the classroom dig site.

á      Define the Egyptian Words,  symbols, or use the Glossary of Terms to define the words you may encounter on your search for Egyptian artifacts.  Here is a hieroglyph website as well.

 

á      Draw the symbol.

 

 

Choose 8 additional tasks from this list:

Check out Ancient Egypt to answer the following questions.

á      What materials were used by the Ancient Egyptians for their sculpture?

á      Is the front, back, or whole body of a stature the most important?

á      Why did the Egyptians mummify their dead?

á      What did they do with the internal organs when they were removed?

Read the following articles and write about each in your journal.

á      Discover what the Cybermummy can tell you by clicking on the questions to learn more about the mummy.

 

Look at the mummies at the other sites and write about what you saw in your journal.

Check out at least 10 pictures of the pyramids of Egypt.

á      Choose 5 and write about your pyramids in your journal

á      Build a pyramid.

Learn about some artifacts found in tombs. Click on each listing to look at the artifacts.

á      Read the Fact or Fiction page. Write 10 things you learned in your journal.

á      Pick one or more pictures from the Coloring Book or choose a picture from one of the Egyptian coloring books in the room and color it.

Check out some Egyptian gods at Ancient Egyptian Lives, Egyptian Gods and More Gods or Egyptian Mythology.

á      Read their descriptions.

á      Choose ten gods and write a description of each god.

á      Draw a picture of 5.

Go to The Tomb of the Chihuahua Pharaohs. Read the page. Press <enter>.

á      Create a drawing of an Ancient Egyptian by following the directions.

á      Draw a scene of Ancient Egypt.

 

Go to Egyptian Coloring Book

á      Choose at least one of the pictures to color. The pictures are in the dig site area of the classroom.

á      Create a mural drawing of a scene from Ancient Egypt as shown from the interior or the exterior of a tomb, temple, or palace.

Watch Quick Time Virtual Reality Panoramas of the Giza Plateau

á      The Temple of Sett I

á      Write in your journal about at least 2 panoramas.

 

Look at some artifacts of Ancient Egypt.

á      Click on the bottom of the object to read about the object.

á      Write in your journal about at least 3 objects.

Read Guardians King Tut

Look at some coffins and sarcophaguses to see how they are decorated.

á      Create a coffin / sarcophagus out of paper.

á      Have a member of your dig group lay down on top of a piece of butcher paper.

á      Lightly trace around him/her. (Be sure the "mummy" folds his/her arms on top of his/her chest.)

á      Separate the coffin into three parts: The head, the chest, and the lower body.

á      Decorate your body. (If your person is a pharaoh don't forget the flail and crook and the false beard.)

á      Make a strip down the center or separating the body parts and write the names of your dig group in hieroglyphics.

á      Be sure to look and read all three pages.

á      Write in your journal about each area.

 

Read about 3 famous pharaohs.

á      Khufu

á      Amenhotep

á      Tutankhamun

á      Write in your journal about your pharaohs

Go to Quiz on Ancient Egypt and another quiz

á      Read each of the descriptions.

á      Decide which picture best fits the facts.

á      Write down each solution you try in your dig journal.

Read about the Rosetta Stone and why it was important to understanding hieroglyphics.

 

Read about hieroglyphics the alphabet.

á      Have your name written in hieroglyphics.

o  Print a copy of your name.

o  Create a cartouche of your name out of clay.

á      Write word or sentence and have it translated to hieroglyphs. Print out your new sentence (Be sure to keep the English version in your journal.)

á      Use the diagram at the classroom dig site to show you how to number.

á      Write the name of the symbol and tell something about the symbol.

Go to The Ancient Egyptian Virtual Pyramid and search the tomb.

á      Click on the numbers to take a walk around the pyramid.

á      Write in your journal about what you see.

Go to Sites and Monuments-Guardian's Egypt

á      Write in your journal about what you see.

Create a pyramid:

á      Draw pictures on the inside sides

á      Paper pyramid

á      Build a pyramid

á      Write about an area you have visited in Egypt on the bottom square of the pyramid.

á      Click on a "painted portrait", "feet", "see the amazing reconstruction of the mummy's face.

á      Write in your journal about what your saw.

Go back to click and look at the artifacts in the rest of the sections.

á      Tell which was your favorite and why in your journal.

Go to The Curse of the Pharaoh

á      Check out at least 10 pictures of the pyramids of Egypt.

o  Choose 5 and write 2 or 3 sentences about each pyramid.

á      Take a virtual trip through a pharaoh's tomb.

á      Visit the pyramid and read the article.

o  Write in your journal about what your learned.

Go to Egyptian Sites and Monuments

á      Click on the Temple of Abu Simbel (Back out when you've finished an area)

o  Click on the entrance.

o  Click on the massive stone.

o  Click on the innermost chamber.

á      Click on pharaoh, Ramses II.

o  Click on Nefertari, some of his wives, figure of god Re-Harakhte, row of baboons, large hall, one of the heads on the temple, and the map of the temple.

o  Click on the center icon at the bottom showing the map, then click on the orange areas

á      Check out at least 3 other sites. Be sure to look at each part inside the site.

á      Write about what you saw and learned in your journal.

Take a photographic trip through Egypt at Rigby's Tour of Egypt

Take a CyberJourney of Ancient Egypt.

á      Visit each site.

o  List each site as you visit it.

á      Click and drag on the image to take a look around the site.

á      Write in your journal about what you saw.


Concluding Activity: Each dig group will create a cover for their dig journal folder. They may be asked to give an oral presentation of their archaeological findings using their report, artifacts they found, the reconstructions they created, and a sample of the web sites they used.
